Reiki is a holistic healing practice that originated
in Japan, with roots to ancient Tibetan and Indian tantric healing methods. It is a gentle, hands-on technique that
channels universal energy for healing, growth and transformation. It is administered by hovering above the body or "laying
on hands/light touch" and is based on the ideal that the unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is
what causes us to be alive. The word "Reiki" is composed of two Japanese Kanji meaning "universal," or "life
force" and "energy", and is usually translated as "universal life force energy". Reiki may
supplement medical treatment and assist in dealing with stress and emotional trauma by increasing the overall energy stores
of the body, relaxing the body and mind, and reducing pain.
Reiki practitioners channel energy through their hands
either directly, or from a distance with the goal of facilitating the recipient's healing response. In a Reiki session,
the client lies down or sits comfortably, fully clothed. The practitioner's hands are placed lightly on or just above the
client's body, palms down, using a series of 12 to 15 different hand positions. Each position is held for about 2 to 5 minutes,
or until the practitioner feels that the flow of energy—experienced as sensations such as heat or tingling in the hands—has
slowed or stopped. Recipients will feel relaxed and calm and may experience sensations of heat or coolness where the
practitioner's hands are resting.
People use Reiki for relaxation, stress reduction, and symptom relief, in efforts
to improve overall health and well-being. Reiki has been used by people with anxiety, chronic pain, and other health conditions,
as well as by people recovering from surgery or experiencing side effects from cancer treatments. Reiki's many beneficial
effects include feelings of peace, security and harmony.
